Wallingford, CT - Specialty Components, Inc. has developed a novel approach to inverted operation of spherical air bearings typically found in semiconductor processing machinery allowing for stable positioning and capture of the moving elements of the device. In this case, the center of gravity of the rotating elements is located above the pivot center, resulting in an unstable condition. Magnets are used to provide preload for the air film, capturing of the sphere as well as counterbalance and centering of the rotating mass. The counterbalance force is adjustable depending on sensitivity and application requirements. An internal hardstop limits the rotational travel, and also prevents the sphere from being removed from the base.
